Il Teatro dell’Opera di Roma porta in scena una nuova Traviata,

nata da un’idea di Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti

con la regia di Sofia Coppola

Carlo Fuortes, Sovrintendente della Fondazione Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, è lieto di annunciare una nuova produzione de La Traviata, in scena dal prossimo 24 Maggio 2016.

Questa straordinaria edizione, ideata da Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti in collaborazione con il Teatro dell’Opera, si avvale di uno eccezionale gruppo di artisti. Da Valentino che ha disegnato i costumi principali, a Sofia Coppola alla sua prima esperienza di regista in un’opera lirica, al brillante Nathan Crowley nelle scenografie.

Maria Grazia Chiuri e Pier Paolo Piccioli, Direttori Creativi della Maison Valentino, creeranno i costumi di Flora e del Coro, che verranno realizzati in collaborazione con la sartoria del Teatro dell’Opera. Mentre i costumi di Violetta disegnati da Valentino saranno realizzati negli atelier couture della Maison.

Valentino considera questa speciale produzione come un grande sogno che diventa realtà, poiché da sempre affascinato dall’arte lirica e dalla sua capacità di creare mondi fantastici e moderni, attraverso musiche meravigliose e senza tempo.

La sua passione in passato lo ha infatti visto disegnare i costumi per un’opera lirica del 1994, ispirata a Rodolfo Valentino e portata in scena al Kennedy Center di Washington; esperienza seguita dalla realizzazione degli splendidi costumi del gala “Valentino” al New York City Ballet, e per il Concerto di Capodanno di Vienna.

La nuova Traviata rappresenta dunque un avvenimento estremamente significativo, nonché uno dei primi progetti supportati dalla Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti.

Sofia Coppola, figura di spicco del cinema americano, al suo primo confronto con la regia lirica, è stata scelta da Valentino dopo la visione del film “Marie Antoinette”, in cui la giovane professionista ha dimostrato una particolare sensibilità estetica e musicale, in equilibrio tra il classico e il moderno.

Inoltre, anche le scene di questa nuova Traviata rimandano al mondo del cinema, firmate dall’inglese Nathan Crowley, già scenografo di Batman Begins e del Cavaliere Oscuro.

Le musiche saranno affidate al maestro cremonese Jader Bignamini, direttore associato dell’orchestra Verdi di Milano, unito da un solido legame al Festival Verdi di Parma.

Tra le voci principali Francesca Dotto e Maria Grazia Schiavo, che si alternano nel ruolo di Violetta, insieme ad Antonio Poli e Arturo Chacón-Cruz, interpreti di Alfredo.

Lo spettacolo andrà in scena per quindici rappresentazioni, dal 24 Maggio al 30 Giugno 2016.

Carlo Fuortes, General Manager of the Rome Opera House Foundation, is pleased to announce a new production of La Traviata, premiering May 24, 2016.

This exclusive show, created by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti in collaboration with the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, will be distinguished thanks to an amazing team of artists: Valentino who created the stage costumes of the main character, Sofia Coppola in her opera directorial debut, and the brilliant production designer Nathan Crowley.

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, Creative Directors of the Maison Valentino, will design the costumes for Flora and the Chorus, created in collaboration with the costume workshop of the theatre. Violetta’s costumes will be designed exclusively by Valentino and crafted in the Maison’s couture atelier.

Valentino sees this special project as a dream come true, since he has always been fascinated by opera and its power to invent fantastic and modern worlds, through wonderful and timeless music.

In fact, his passion in the past led him to design the costumes for a 1994 opera, inspired by Rudolph Valentino and staged at the Kennedy Center in Washington; an experience followed by the execution of the extraordinary costumes for the “Valentino” gala at the New York City Ballet, and for the Vienna New Year’s Concert.

The new Traviata thus represents a momentous event, as well as one of the first projects supported by the Fondazione Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti.

Sofia Coppola, a prominent figure in American cinema – in her opera directorial debut – was invited by Valentino to join this production after he watched the movie “Marie Antoinette”, in which the young talent unveiled a distinctive sensitivity and musical aesthetic, balancing the classic and the modern.

Even the scenes of this new Traviata take inspiration from the film world, as they will be the work of British production designer Nathan Crowley, whose previous work includes Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

The music will be entrusted to the maestro Jader Bignamini, associate director of the Verdi Orchestra in Milan, and also closely involved with the Verdi Festival in Parma. Among the leading voices will be Francesca Dotto and Maria Grazia Schiavo, alternating in the role of Violetta, along with Antonio Poli and Arturo Chacón-Cruz, taking on the role of Alfredo.

Tickets for La Traviata will be available at the box office of the Teatro dell’Opera and on www.operaroma.it.

The show will be run for fifteen performances, from May 24 to June 30, 2016.
